Doris "Yvonne" Raymond
Doris “Yvonne” Raymond, formerly of Fredonia, PA, passed away Wednesday, July 14, 2021 in Willoughby, OH following a long struggle with Alzheimer’s. She was 84. Yvonne was born in Monroe Township near Conneaut, OH, the daughter of the late Doris Risley Nichols. On July 29, 1957 she married Alfred Raymond, who preceded her in death, after 49 years of marriage. Yvonne was a 1955 graduate of Albion Area High School. She worked as a reporter and assistant society editor for the Conneaut News Herald, for the US Department of Agriculture in Mercer County, PA, and as an Avon representative. In 1982 she started as a part-time local reporter for the Greenville Record Argus and eventually worked her way up to fulltime editor in 1988 where she enjoyed writing a weekly column and editing the annual cookbook. She retired as Lifestyles Editor in 2002. Yvonne was a long-time member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Greenville, PA, where she helped teach the Adult Sunday School class, sang in the choir, served on or led a variety of committees, and once infamously wore a penguin suit to teach music at Vacation Bible School. Women’s causes were dear to Yvonne, who served as a Cadette Girl Scout leader and held a variety of offices with the Greenville Business and Professional Women, and was chosen as their Woman of the Year in 2006. She was also active in the Fredonia Republican Women and helped to plan the Fredonia Centennial-Bicentennial celebrations in 1976. Whatever group she served was likely to call on her for publicity through her writing and photography. Yvonne was a woman of many interests, but her first love was spending time with her family. She was an avid and thorough reader of newspapers, a writer and photographer; she enjoyed sewing, playing the piano, bowling and attending plays and concerts, especially those featuring her daughters or grandchildren. Yvonne is survived by her daughters: Laura Raymond, Scio, OH; Paula Knapp (Darrell), Mentor, OH; Angela Adams (James), St. Louis, Missouri; Patricia Raiken (David), Columbus, OH; seven granddaughters: Stephanie and Erin Knapp, Renae Adams Morrisroe (David), Andrea, Eva, and Theresa Adams; Victoria Raiken; one grandson, Nicholas Raiken, and a brother Arthur Risley, North Kingsville, OH. She was preceded in death by her mother Doris Risley Nichols, her stepfather W.A. Nichols and her husband Alfred Raymond. Calling hours will be held at the Mattera Funeral Home, 188 East State Street, Albion, on Saturday from 10am until the time of a funeral service there at 12pm with The Rev. Vanessa E.B. Clark, rector of St. James Episcopal Church, Painesville, OH, officiating. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery, Wellsburg. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 17876 St. Clair Ave., Cleveland, OH 44110.
