Bertha Jean Rausch

Bertha Jean (Sherman) Rausch passed away September 29, 2017 at home with her husband, John, by her side.  Bertha was born August 2, 1928 in Lundy’s Lane, PA.  She was the daughter of the late Tracy and Mary (Joslin) Sherman.  Bertha attended school in Lundy’s Lane and Albion High School, graduating in 1946.  Her first employment was at Kennedy’s Store in Cranesville and for a time she worked at Albion Phone Co.  On April 3, 1948 she married John Rausch Jr. and they began their married life in the Albion area.  They raised their family and worked together to build Rausch Farms, their dairy operation.  Having grown up on Sherman Farm, she was very knowledgeable about farming and the work ethic she displayed were evident in this endeavor.  She also worked at Teledyne Penn Union in Edinboro for fifteen years prior to her retirement in 1992.  When they were free to travel, Bertha and John enjoyed many trips to various locations in the U.S. visiting family and friends and taking in the sights.  Bertha enjoyed gardening, playing cards, bowling, working on puzzles and being active outdoors.  She was a member of the Conneaut Township Grange until its closing.  She was a member of the Universalist Church in Lundy’s Lane, now titled, the Church on the Hill, and she attended Cranesville United Methodist Church.  Bertha Jean was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Cora (Carl) Drury and three brothers; Edwin (Nora), Ellsworth (Alice) and James (Gladys) Sherman.  She is survived by her husband, John and daughters, Janet (Charles) Chandler, Jean (Chuck) English, Joyce Walston, Jill (Scott) Douglass and a son, Jeffrey Rausch.  A sister in law, Martha Sherman, nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.  To all her caregivers:  the family extends our heartfelt thanks.  Bless you all.  We who loved her will miss the smiles, hugs & kisses, her wonderful sense of humor and her kind, generous nature.  God gave us a precious gift to cherish and now she is at rest in our Savior’s loving arms.  Calling hours will be held at the Mattera Funeral Home, 188 East State Street, Albion, on Wednesday from 3pm to 7pm.  A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday at 11am with Pastor Jennifer Craig officiating.  Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery, Wellsburg.  Memorials may be made in honor of Bertha to the Albion Area Library, 111 East Pearl Street, Albion, PA  16401 or to a charity of one’s choice.  To send flowers, light a memory candle or leave a condolence, please visit
