Jerlene Ash

Jerlene June Hizer Ash, 82, of Albion, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, August 26, 2017.  She was born in Linville, NC on September 1, 1934 to Austin Hizer and Edith Denny Pittsenbarger.  She was raised by her foster parents Wayne and Georgia Byrd from Bluefield, VA.  Jerlene, affectionately called “Jeri” by some of her friends and “Meemie” by her family, was foremost a born again Christian, unashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ, lover of God and prayer warrior.  Jerlene loved her family unconditionally and affectionately.  She loved the color red and loved shopping for shoes, curtains, throw rugs and handbags.  She enjoyed working at Northwestern Elementary School in the library and cafeteria as an aide.  Southern blood ran deep in her veins, cathead biscuits and gravy were her specialty and apple pie was a must a couple times a week.  She was a gospel singer, song leader, and Sunday school teacher.  She was extremely gifted in writing beautiful songs and poetry.  Jerlene was a loving mother who adored her children, grandchildren, and husband.  Tiny in body but strong in will, she endured many things in her life and yet continued to love with all her heart, always full of compassion.  She is at the center of many offered prayers for her friends and family and is forever engrained in the hearts of those whose lives she touched.  She will be greatly missed and always loved.  Jerlene’s message to all of us would most certainly be; don’t miss that heavenly city, whatever you do.  It will be worth it all.  In addition to her parents and foster parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Jennings Ash.  She is survived by three children, Darrell Ash and his wife, Linda, of Stephen City, VA, Sherry Frame and her husband, Garrett, of Albion, Gregory Ash of Albion, four grandchildren, Kelly Frame, Andrea Frame, Jennifer Ash, Olivia Ash, two sisters, Linda Lunley and her husband, Daniel, of Johnson City, TN, Betty Lou Marsh of Florida, four brothers, James Hizer and his wife, Carol, of Conneaut, OH, Paul Pitsenbarger and his wife, Carol, of Springboro, John Pittsenbarger and his wife, Rachel, of Lima, OH, Jack Hizer and his wife, Chris, of Toledo, OH, and many nieces and nephews.  Calling hours will be held at the Mattera Funeral Home, 188 East State Street, Albion, on Wednesday evening from 5-8 p.m.  A funeral service be held at the funeral home on Thursday morning at 11 a.m. with Pastor Ray Lamb officiating.  Burial will follow in Albion Cemetery.  To send flowers, light a memory candle or leave a condolence, please visit
